Job Stress

"My experience with the When Working Hurts™ program has provided me with awareness, knowledge, skills and hope. Awareness of the effects of engaging in emotional labour, knowledge on how those effects contribute to the quality of that labour, skills to mitigate the effects and finally hope that one can do quality work and have a rich full career and make a difference. I am convinced that this program can reclaim professionals who have been frozen by the impacts of working with and bearing witness to trauma and suffering."

Experiential Learning In Self-Care: Yoga & Relaxation Practices For Every Body:

During this half-day workshop, three distinct self care practices are introduced: Office yoga is a practice that maintains your physical health and restores energy throughout the day. Participants will learn to ease back pain, discover ways to reduce eye and neck fatigue, and deactivate “computer posture”. They will discover gentle yoga stretches that are designed to be done anywhere, anytime, and will learn simple deep breathing exercises, sitting, standing and relaxation postures that help develop a more flexible, balanced and strong body and mind. Restorative Yoga is a healing form of Hatha yoga where participants are guided into supported postures using simple props. “Restorative postures” activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the body’s natural healing system) and are beneficial to anyone seeking stress reduction. Short relaxation routines and deep relaxation practices strengthen the immune system, calm the mind and restore energy in the body. Throughout the workshop, participants will have opportunities to assess and reflect on how stress impacts on body and mind. Through assessment tools and exercises they will be able to consider ways to apply yoga and relaxation techniques at work and in their lives.

When tragedy befalls someone we know, we all react at many levels and within the context of our own lives and histories. This specialized program provides insights and strategies for the professional and the organization dealing with the loss of a colleague.

Maintaining Wellness While Coping With High Risk/High Needs Clients & Personnel:

This workshop has been specifically designed for staff dealing with particularly challenging clients, members of the public and/or organizational personnel. In particular we are concerned with staff who have to deal with high risk individuals who present with hostility, threatening behaviours, verbal abuse, or physical aggression. We are equally concerned about staff exposure to high needs individuals who present with multiple needs, are often highly distressed, and may be in very difficult or tragic circumstances. This workshop has two components. The first half of the program focuses on managing high risk/high needs individuals, while the second half is concerned with the self-care needs of staff who deal with these challenging people.

Primary and secondary trauma (also commonly referred to as vicarious trauma) are occupational hazards for professionals working within high risk occupations such as child welfare, corrections, emergency services, health care, social services and the military. This workshop gives participants an understanding of the possible effects of exposure to primary and secondary trauma, and provides intervention strategies at the individual, team and organizational levels.

Post-Strike Recovery:

This workshop is designed to assist managers and staff to bring closure following a strike or significant labour disruption. It enhances personal and organizational resilience in the aftermath of a strike, and supports positive future planning and development. Typically, post-strike environments feature extensive accumulations of events and experiences that have occurred over extended periods of time, within complex social environments. Thus, the post-strike recovery process requires a comprehensive approach.

Workplace Wellness Program: 1-Year Follow-Up:

This 1-day program is designed as an intensive annual follow-up to the 2-day core Workplace Wellness Program. Participants review the intervening year since they first took the program, and organizational and workplace areas of success and ongoing challenge are identified. At the personal level, participants complete the battery of self-assessment tools and compare their results with those from the previous year. Having examined and compared their past and current status, participants are then encouraged to develop strength-based "second-stage" planning that will assist both individuals and the organization to enhance resiliency and well-being.
